Tooth Extraction Aftercare: Ensuring Proper Healing
After a tooth extraction at KoKo Dental Care, a little extra care goes a long way toward a smooth recovery. Whether you’ve had a wisdom tooth removed or a damaged tooth extracted, proper aftercare helps your mouth heal comfortably. It reduces the risk of complications, especially dry socket, which is one of the most common (and painful) post-extraction issues.
The First 24 Hours: Protect the Blood Clot
A blood clot forms in the extraction site shortly after your procedure. This clot is essential, as it acts like a natural bandage that protects the bone and nerves underneath while new tissue develops. Dry socket happens when this clot becomes dislodged or dissolves too early, leaving the area exposed.
To protect the clot:
- Bite gently on gauze for the time your dentist recommends.
- Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using a straw for at least 24 hours.
- Do not smoke or vape, as suction and chemicals can interfere with healing.
Manage Swelling and Discomfort
Some swelling and mild soreness are normal. You can reduce swelling by placing an ice pack on your cheek for 15 minutes on, followed by 15 minutes off, during the first day. Take any prescribed or recommended pain relievers exactly as directed. If you were given antibiotics, finish the full course, even if you start feeling better.
Eat Soft Foods and Stay Hydrated
Stick with soft, cool foods like yogurt, applesauce, smoothies (no straw), mashed potatoes, or scrambled eggs for the first couple of days. Avoid crunchy, spicy, or very hot foods that can irritate the site. Also, drink plenty of water to support healing.
Gentle Oral Hygiene Matters
Keeping your mouth clean helps prevent infection, but you must be cautious around the extraction site. On the first day, brush and floss as usual, but avoid the affected area. After 24 hours, you may gently rinse with warm saltwater (½ teaspoon of salt in a cup of water) a few times a day, especially after meals.

Spark™ Clear Aligners: How to Help Ensure Ideal Results
Embarking on a journey with Spark™ clear aligners at KoKo Dental Care is an exciting step toward achieving a healthier, straighter smile. To ensure the best results and a smooth experience, following best practices in wearing, cleaning, and lifestyle habits is essential. Here’s a helpful guide to support your success with Spark™ clear aligners.
Wear Your Clear Aligners as Directed
Consistency is key. For optimal results, wear your aligners 20 to 22 hours daily, removing them only for eating, drinking anything other than water, and cleaning. Skipping wear time can delay progress and may affect your outcome.
Always follow your dentist’s instructions regarding how long each set should be worn, typically around one to two weeks.
Clean Your Aligners Daily
Proper cleaning can help prevent discoloration, odor, and bacterial buildup. Rinse your aligners every time you remove them. Gently brush them with a soft toothbrush (no toothpaste, as it can be abrasive) and use approved aligner cleaning solutions or tablets. It’s best to avoid hot water, which can warp the aligner material. Keeping your aligners clean helps maintain their clarity and protects your oral health.
Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene
Since aligners sit snugly against your teeth, brushing and flossing after every meal before reinserting them is an integral part of your treatment. Trapped food particles and plaque can cause eventual tooth decay or gum issues. We suggest carrying a travel toothbrush and floss with you to make cleaning on the go easier.
Avoid Certain Lifestyle Habits
To preserve the condition of your aligners and support treatment success:
- Don’t eat or drink with aligners in (except water).
- Avoid smoking or chewing gum while wearing them.
- Limit sugary and staining foods and drinks to protect your teeth and the aligners.
- Always store aligners in their case when not in use to prevent loss or damage.
Communicate With Our Team
Attend all scheduled check-ins, whether in person or virtual. If you experience discomfort, a poor fit, or lose an aligner, contact your provider promptly. Staying engaged in your treatment plan ensures adjustments can be made quickly and effectively.
By staying diligent, clean, and proactive, you’ll maximize the success of your Spark™ clear aligner treatment—and enjoy a straighter, healthier smile sooner than you think. KoKo Dental Care Helps Ease Dental Anxiety
Let’s face it—hearing “dentist” can cause anxiety for many people. Whether it stems from a past bad experience, fear of pain, or just the sound of a drill, dental anxiety is real and surprisingly common. But KoKo Dental Care emphasizes compassionate, personal dental care for all patients—especially those with dental anxiety.
Compassion Changes Everything
When patients are met with empathy, patience, and genuine concern, a dental office transforms from a place of fear to a welcoming environment. Compassionate dental care means more than just a warm smile—it involves listening without judgment, explaining procedures in understandable terms, and creating a calming, respectful atmosphere.
For patients with dental anxiety, Koko Dental Care will always:
- Listen: Before doing anything, we take the time to understand each patient’s fears, past experiences, and preferences.
- Move at your pace: Whether talking for an extra 10 minutes or breaking up treatment into smaller steps, your comfort drives the plan.
- Create a warm, judgment-free environment: We don’t shame, pressure, or dismiss. Everyone here is trained to make you feel safe and supported, no matter how long since your last visit.
- Provide comfort-focused care: We use numbing gels, noise-canceling headphones, and gentle techniques to make every step more tolerable—even relaxing.
- Communicate clearly and calmly: We explain what’s happening before it happens, so there are no surprises. You can ask to stop at any time.
- Have consistent faces: You’ll see the same friendly team members each time, which builds trust and reduces anxiety.
In addition, we have extra resources to help, such as calming music, pharmacy-prescribed anxiolytics, a tech-forward approach so you can see what we see and stay informed, a multilingual team and inclusive culture, and financial accessibility with accepted insurance and flexible payment plans.
