Tooth Extraction Aftercare: Ensuring Proper Healing
After a tooth extraction at KoKo Dental Care, a little extra care goes a long way toward a smooth recovery. Whether you’ve had a wisdom tooth removed or a damaged tooth extracted, proper aftercare helps your mouth heal comfortably. It reduces the risk of complications, especially dry socket, which is one of the most common (and painful) post-extraction issues.
The First 24 Hours: Protect the Blood Clot
A blood clot forms in the extraction site shortly after your procedure. This clot is essential, as it acts like a natural bandage that protects the bone and nerves underneath while new tissue develops. Dry socket happens when this clot becomes dislodged or dissolves too early, leaving the area exposed.
To protect the clot:
- Bite gently on gauze for the time your dentist recommends.
- Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using a straw for at least 24 hours.
- Do not smoke or vape, as suction and chemicals can interfere with healing.
Manage Swelling and Discomfort
Some swelling and mild soreness are normal. You can reduce swelling by placing an ice pack on your cheek for 15 minutes on, followed by 15 minutes off, during the first day. Take any prescribed or recommended pain relievers exactly as directed. If you were given antibiotics, finish the full course, even if you start feeling better.
Eat Soft Foods and Stay Hydrated
Stick with soft, cool foods like yogurt, applesauce, smoothies (no straw), mashed potatoes, or scrambled eggs for the first couple of days. Avoid crunchy, spicy, or very hot foods that can irritate the site. Also, drink plenty of water to support healing.
Gentle Oral Hygiene Matters
Keeping your mouth clean helps prevent infection, but you must be cautious around the extraction site. On the first day, brush and floss as usual, but avoid the affected area. After 24 hours, you may gently rinse with warm saltwater (½ teaspoon of salt in a cup of water) a few times a day, especially after meals.
